Shirodhara/ Thakra dhara

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that originated in India. It involves gently pouring a continuous stream of warm oil or other liquid onto the forehead, specifically on the "third eye" region, which is the space between the eyebrows. The word "shiro" means head, and "dhara" means flow in Sanskrit.

.During a shirodhara session, the person lies down on a table or bed while a specially designed apparatus or vessel is used to pour the oil in a rhythmic and continuous manner onto the forehead. The oil is usually warmed to a comfortable temperature. The stream of oil flows back and forth over the forehead for a specific duration, typically around 30 to 60 minutes.

The liquid used in shirodhara is often herbal-infused oils, such as sesame oil, coconut oil, or a blend of oils. Sometimes, other liquids like buttermilk, herbal decoctions, or even plain water are used, depending on the desired therapeutic effect.

Shirodhara is believed to have a balancing and calming effect on the mind and nervous system. It is often used to promote relaxation, relieve stress, improve sleep quality, and enhance mental clarity. The continuous flow of oil on the forehead is said to stimulate the "third eye" or the Ajna chakra, which is associated with intuition and higher consciousness in some spiritual traditions.

Before undergoing a shirodhara session, it is advisable to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or therapist who can assess your individual needs and determine the appropriate type of oil or liquid to be used. They will also take into account any specific health conditions or contraindications that may affect the treatment.

Please note that while shirodhara is generally considered safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, individuals with certain medical conditions such as recent head injuries, skin infections, or acute illnesses may need to avoid or modify the treatment. It's always best to consult a healthcare professional before undergoing any new therapy.
